Illustration Friday: DETACH and HELVETICA GIVEAWAY!

I know, most of you are probably thinking...WHAAATTT? This is not a children's illustration? and why is Edrian posting a graphic design piece?
I guess I have to go back a decade or so ago, when I was in college studying art, and graphic design...YES, I am a graphic designer too! So there it is! I guess that didn't take too long. I love graphic design and when I think about how much design is around us, it's really amazing to see how much we take it for granted.
I watched a wonderful documentary about one of the most popular typefaces out there: HELVETICA. If you are curious about how design impacts our culture, or if you love graphic design, I highly recommend this film.
HELVETICA is a film by Gary Hustwit and is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It also features some of the greatest graphic designers of our time!

GIVEAWAY!!
You could purchase the entire film on iTunes  or you may take your chances and win a FREE download from iTunes here. Just enter a comment for this post from now through August 22nd-noon.  I will then pick TWO winners at random and forward the email addresses to the film's distributor who will then gift the download from iTunes. I will post the winners on Monday Aug 18th. Please make sure to leave an email address where I can contact you if you win.

Very nice, I can relate since I am a designer too! My brother was making fun of me because I wanted to see that film, he said only a designer would want to see a movie about the most boring font ever :)

I love looking at graphic design! Wish I had a talent for it. How awesome that you can put on your designer hat and have a completely different and wonderful style! This piece is very clever and very clean. Never knew just how much I appreciate Helvetica!

Helvetica is great, and I think you're brilliant in using it to depict the theme (detach). It cuts to the essence. Wow.

*re: the movie ... Isn't it funny when Erik Spiekermann said he loved to look at types like some people adored wine and liked to look at girl’s bottom?

Will have to see that film, when I am driving I am often identifying fonts etc on billboards and signs. I know , a bit strange. This is a clever and very strong design.

Very effective design. I've seen that movie and it was fascinating--and I'm definitely more on the illustrator side of the fence.

I was lucky enough to see the movie with Garry Hustwick introducing it - it was inspirational. My husband who is not a designer said something like this: "so you went to see a full length feature about A FONT. right...." well, you've gotta love design to understand I guess...
nice peace of work

Nice way to interact design and typography. I relate to this illustration because I also studied Typography.
Thanks for your comment on my work!

Hello! said...

I have a huge admiration for graphic designers, becouse they express so much using the simplest elements. So I don't mind at all seeing some of your "other" work every now and then! Great job!

This is such a neat illustration and such a generous giveaway, Edrian.
I also love typography, even though I'm not a graphic designer. I've heard about this film, and only great things!
